I found the quote I been looking for, you said this in class about a month ago in the Smiley Building cave... Tree Beings don't just 'stand on top of Mother Earth," they have deep and wide roots which function as conduits toward living WITH and FROM Mother Earth and their leafy (or needle-ly) arms lift toward Brahman all day as if in worship; you do the same and thou shall Connect with Vrkasana's rasa.

It has stayed in my mind every day. And so I practice my Tree Poses every chance I get outside.

great questions and you know what? answer is; depends. the greatest pull up'rs (pull up'rs?) are Blessed with tendon insertions like that of a Grizzly Bear...tendons are WAAAAY stronger than muscles, so if you have naturally strong and long biceps/forearm tendons, there is no great need to strength the segments; just crank the pull ups. for most of us, however, and for injury prevention as well as to help our Pull Up strength/power, yes, strengthening the assistive muscles (forearms, biceps, shoulders) are paramount.
a) both! Pull Ups can be thought of as the Jump Squats for the Upper Body...must have Zero Timidity and explosive power to get out of the bottom position (when you are at arm's length beneath the bar).

b) probably. the V-shape is inherently gifted by genetics...where and volume of the origination fibers of the Lat (iliac crest, sacral vertebrae, lumbar vertebrae, thoracic vertebra, ribs, and even the scapula!) no other movement forces the Lat to fire like Pull Ups...

Coach,
would you apply that rule to pull-ups?
what’s the best way to increase one’s pull-up reps.?
wide grip, shoulder width, or narrow grip?

Warrior Leaf

coach says:

Warrior Leaf!
DEFINITELY applies to Pull Ups!!!
ways to increase Pull Up fitness; traversing for hours on climbing walls, doing all type of pull ups/grips, wall-assisted handstand pushups, weighted Pull Ups asap…
Pull Ups, baby! wow…what a Mirror! remember, you are at your biomechanical weakest during the first few inches getting out of the bottom position…this is where explosive power helps; thus, Hang Cleans, PowerCleans, even Repetition Jerks/Snatches will help!

WF Strength Training quota rule:

if this rule is in effect?

then you MUST achieve at least 50% of your previous set’s effort…if you don’t? the penalty is a 1:00 set of Jump Squats…

i.e;

Yang Day…you’re doing Dips…on set one you crank four dips…if on set #2
you don’t crank two qualifying Dip (upper arm bone must break parallel
in bottom position – see pic above – and then be locked out up top),
then well, you get to treat yourself to a 1-minute set of our ever
Beloved Jump Squats…baby!

hope this clarifies the Quota Rule for you!

Most Precious Johannes,

RE:
Coach,

what do you think about traditional Martial Artists when it comes to strength?

• strength is an abused word. please continue...

RE: Two guys I know have done a lot of Teakwondo in their youth (one is even Grandmaster, whatever that means in Taekwondo) and when it comes to Yoga they seem to have superhuman strength, at least compared to me. Today they do not take part in competitions any more and rely mostly on Yoga and other bodyweight-moves, but their strength and explosiveness is still quite impressive. Don't ask me how much weight they could benchpress, deadlift or squat, but it would still be "not bad".

• sounds impressive...
yet, many things 'sound impressive'...

RE:

Let me share my thoughts on strength building: When it comes to building maximal strength and muscle mass, lifting weight like barbells is most effective. However, one can achieve respectable maximal strength and explosiveness with bodyweight alone also. It might take longer and require more different exercises (nothing beats the olympic lifts I think), but it works.

What do you think coach?

• coach thinks (and feels) that:
1) i love you
2) you must study the Sacred Scriptures of WF more intensely to stand-under (understand) the categorical differences between strength, strength endurance, power, agility, yogic movement, and speed.
3) continue your obvious insightful assault and questioning among the oceanic wisdom and teachers and purveyors of Kali Yuga.

just recall: 7 World Championships in 5 different sports? if you find a Teacher that can match that? let ilg know...i am waiting for another such Wholeness 'Martial Artist'...

Head bowed,

Johannes
