i recall a Dharma story about either Shankaracharya
(wow, that was a m(om)ment…i can’t believe i spelled that right
from the top of my feeble head! thank you, Brahman!)

Like any MahaRishi (Great Teacher), Shankaracharya was traveling about the Indian continent after His Enlightenment, teaching the Dharma to anyone who would listen. one day, He was teaching to a large crowd about the importance of Mantra and Purity of Word Choice. He was giving particular attention to the mantra of “Om”.

There was this one famous Brahmin (intellectual) who was one of the many intellectuals who were basically pissed off about the revolutionary ideas and philosophies that Shankaracharya was teaching. This guy kept pacing back and forth in the front row, right in front of everyone heckling Shakaracharya, cursing him, ridiculing him…well, you know the type.

Shankaracharya was unflappable however, and His equipoise was elegant as He continued to teach. After some time, however, the Brahmin’s interruptions became too great for the others to benefit from the teaching and suddenly Shankaracharya jumped up from His full lotus teaching gesture and got right into the face of the astonished Brahmin,

“You stupid, over-inflated egocentric intellectual, you! Why you are such a spiritually ignorant ass!”

the Brahmin – as well as all the attendees – were shocked by this esteemed Teacher’s outrage…which of course, the Brahmin bought right into saying,

“How DARE you call me an ass! I am from the Brahmin Caste! I have been raised in the highest learning schools and have many followers and have written books!”, he raged on, his face grew red with anger and the veins on his neck bulged, “An ASS? How DARE you question my superior intellect! I can recite the Scriptures from memory faster than anyone! You think I am not Enlightened! look at how you lose your temper! YOU are the one who is not Enlightened! An ASS?!?! YOU are the ASS!” he screamed.

“Sir,” quietly replied Shankaracharya, “i merely called you an ‘ass’ once, and see how the power of that tiny, un-sacred and common word completely shifted your body, mind, and spirit! Now perhaps you can begin to sense just how transformative and powerful is the continual recitation of a Blessed Mantra which has been Divinely Empowered by the Enlightened Ones since the beginning of time!”

Having heard and felt the Truth of the Shankaracharya’s Teaching, the Brahmin surrendered his ego at the moment and became one of Shankaracharya’s foremost followers until his own Enlightenment several years later.

Without a Blessed Mantra from ones Teacher,
our minds remain vulnerable and unprotected and weak.
Meditation will not be deeply fruitful, and spiritual
progress retarded. Daily mundane life remains daily mundane life
without a Blessed Mantra permeating our actions. Sports remain mere
games without being fueled by a Blessed Mantra.
