Greetings all!
I saw a very interesting woman this week in the clinic. She is a very health conscious patient which caused her to adopt a nearly complete Vegan lifestyle, and proud of it. She eats organic. She exercises every day, and in fact teaches others how to exercise. She is in her early fifties, very upbeat, optimistic about life and a serene beauty, but exhausted.
Completely exhausted.
After a battery of lab tests I could see why: very low adrenal hormones and ovarian hormones, barely detectable estrogen, testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol levels. Very low blood amino acids and very low digestive enzymes. Very low Vitamin D level even though she is nicely tanned and spends time outside every day. Her skin does not have the enzymes to even covert Vitamin D2 to D3. Additionally she has very low minerals, low stomach acid, low bone density.
Diagnosis?
Severe protein deficiency from her Vegan diet.
Without sufficient quality protein you can’t make body proteins to keep your body well. This one deficiency had caused this entire cascade.
When I asked her to name her top three sources of protein foods she said “black beans, spinach and kale.”
Not so, my dear.
Our bodies have a 2.5 million year history of using animal proteins for the manufacture and maintenance of bodies. A cow and a rabbit are able to use grass to make more cows and breed new rabbits, but a human isn’t engineered to do that. Spinach is not a high protein food for a human. It’s actually close to a non-protein food. Same with kale. Black beans are a little better, but not good enough.
For those who want to be vegetarians or vegans you must pay attention to at least 3 nutrients that are poorly represented in the vegetable kingdom: Essential amino acids, EPA and DHA, the essential omega 3 fats, and B12.
Yes, vegetarians and vegans may find evidence that they are healthier, live longer, etc. But even if true, those comparisons are to the fast food nation eaters, with no vegetables except French fries and ketchup, whose oils are all deep fried and all the food full of sugar and refined chemicalized ingredients. That is not a good comparison.
Vegetarianism is wonderful for all the good foods that are eaten. Just add some protein, DHA, EPA, and B12 and you’ll live to be 100 with a strong body and plenty of energy.
To do that you should be taking 10 tablets of MAP Master Amino Acid tablets twice daily to maintain your protein tissues. This product is Vegan and Kosher and can be taken by anyone (and should be). With MAP you’ll be able to make all your body’s required enzymes, and grow new cells, and replenish and repair your cells, your immune proteins, your hormones, and the lining of your gut and your blood brain barrier – all those vital tissues that my poor exhausted patient was “neglecting” with her low protein diet.
She was astounded by learning about this. “But but but but……” she began to plead……….
“Just give me three months I told her. You will see.”
She agreed.
She will now get well and recover.
