Last evening, during another Crazy Wisdom HP Yoga® PROP WORKOUT, i found myself encouraging the students to keep their mind tethered to the “Hum SAH” Mantra which is the official Mantra of my Prop Workouts, and when the mind wanders away from the the Mantra? snap it back to the Mantra just like snapping a dog leash on a dog during obedience training…in my ways, a PROP Workout, Zazen, or as our Practice matures; even brushing our teeth bec(om)es Mind Obedience Training; just keep snapping back the leash of the wandering mind to the Mantra.
“Chances are VERY likely,” i went on as the students were in various stages of sacred sweat, “that if your mind is running rampant and far away from the Mantra in this class? Well, that same likelihood of rampant mind will occur outside this class, and that, my friends along the Path? Is precisely how we get hurt; rampant mind.”
In the ancient meditation instructions, it is said that at the beginning, thoughts will arrive one on top of another, uninterrupted, like a steep mountain waterfall. Gradually, as you perfect meditation, thoughts become like the water in a deep, narrow gorge, then a great river slowly winding its way down to the sea,
and finally the mind becomes like a still and placid ocean, ruffled by only the occasional ripple or wave.
