Local Snowshoe Racer To Make Sports History To Help Her People
“Oh, I’m going to Nationals, even if I have to hitchhike and hunt beaver along the way in order to get there…I’m doing this to re-inspire my Diné Tribe…we didn’t fight for this country to remain free just to become lazy.” – Sandra “Dawagahti” Lee. photo of Dawagahti during a private yoga session, by steve ilg
DURANGO, CO –
Durango local snowshoe racer, Sandra “Dawagaghti” Lee ( yinishye, Tachii nii nishli, Kinyaa aanii bashishchini – born for the Red-Running-Into-Water Clan, and born for the Towering House Clan), ran a National Qualifying time at Durango’s USSSA-Sanctioned Snowshoe Race; The Winter Warrior 10k (held Feb. 9th, at the Durango Nordic Center), and now stands to make sports history as the first female Native American to ever compete at a National Snowshoe Championship. This year’s Championship is March 15-17th in Bend, OR. Sandra is racing to generate awareness toward obesity and diabetes which is ravaging the Navajo Nation and other Native American tribes. A documentary film is in the works of her efforts to re-inspire a once proud Diné Nation within which running is historically an integral spiritual and physical component of their Tradition.
Sandra, and her coach – local yoga teacher and outdoor sports performance trainer, Steve Ilg – have been raising funds primarily through Coach Ilg’s students, since efforts to raise funds through Navajo organizations have yet to produce a return phone call. Every dollar is needed to help Sandra get to Nationals, and because of that, Coach Ilg and Sandra are offering a donation-based, High Performance Yoga® “PROP WORKOUT” Class following a short talk about her Mission by Sandra on Wednesday, March 13th, beginning at 5:30pm and ending at 7:30pm on the 2nd floor of the Smiley Building. All abilities are welcome to participate and no prior yoga experience is required. Minimum age; 14.
