Animas River, New Years Morning, 2011 by steve ilg

Hi Steve,
This is quite the surreal landscape photo. I am impressed with the way the
light has been captured and the foreground and backgrounds have such
contrast. Is this smoke or is it a common occurrence of vapor rising off the
river?

Thank you for sharing this with us.

Most Noble Magazine Warrior Keith!

thanks for your interest!

it’s not smoke, although the Narrow Gauge Train does run alongside the river at this point…
there could be some contribution to firesmoke from chimneys, yet, smoke rises, and this shot is very close to low lying river.

it’s definitely vapor rising from the river, particularly dense (relative to Durango) because the overnight
low was -17…which is uncommon for here.

there has been a deep freeze around Durango this winter…the high country is actually warmer than town…
kinda like an inversion yet, i think there is supposed to be cloud cover in a true inversion…there is probably an accurate
technical name, however i don’t know what it is.

thanks and this picture has officially become the most popular screensaver among my ‘tribe’ of students and fans and friends!

keep up the great work,
