pic;  i was actually trying to flex my ab’s to impress y’all in this pic, but all that did was wrinkle my feeble pecs…sorry, but hey, age happens, man.   you know; i got a GREAT complement from (yet another) local girl turned pro champion; Carmen Small…who, at the end of a burly Club Ride, finished with me in the lead group said, “Wow, you have a great aero(dynamic) position, do you have a Time Trial bike?” well, thanks to Mike French, one of Durango’s fastest yet most gentle, kind, and generous leaders;  i’ll be racing this bike of his now mine at the Time Trial.  THANK YOU, MIGUEL!!!

for the first time ever, i’ll be racing in the 50+ Age Group next weekend at Iron Horse…
actually, i’ll be racing in the 45-54 Age group, yet,  really,  i’ll be more interested in those 50+’rs…
amazingly our ‘old’ Age Group WON the OVERALL Road Race last year, thanks to Ned Overend, another ageless wonder from Durango.

Originally, i signed up to do what i did last year;  race in the KOM (King Of the Mountain) competition which combines your times from Saturday’s Road  Race with Sunday’s Mountain Bike Race.  However, after having severely sprained my left thumb TWICE while telemark skiing like an madman during the last few
slush days at Purgatory,  it became apparent in early May that there was no way i could race my mountain bike.  i could not use my left thum-shifters!   Last year, i did the KOM and finished 9th overall AG, though my spirit and mind was reeling within a Bardo Cloud after ushering my own father into the Bardo a few days before the races.

thankfully, the  Race Director of the Iron Horse – a friend – allowed me to shift my MTB registration into a full on road omnium,  so my Iron Horse weekend looks like this:
•) Saturday;  Road Race to Silverton   (47 miles, 6700′ of climbing)
•) Sunday; Downtown Criterium (haven’t done a crit in 2 years…oh well)
•) Time Trial to Old Shalona (13.7-mile, 1,400′ climbing)

yeah, that’ll be a workout, awlright…

and yes, Dewa is totally stoked about racing the Kid’s downtown criterium again…this time as a 4 year-old without training wheels on a two-wheeler!!!  you GO, Dewa!

this whole town is going nutso already…tomorrow is the Devo bike swap, then the loads of visiting cyclists and their families start streaming into our little mountain hamlet gearing up for the oldest, continually run bicycle race in America; the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic…

even the Animal Realm is going crazy;  yesterday a raccoon attempted a kill on our chickens in broad daylight, and there is young bear that keeps shitting all over our backyard, and this morning a mountain lion was patrolling in a nearby neighborhood looking for deer, ‘coons,  and kids..

such is life in the Bubble come spring…

Blessed be your own training and if you have yet done what it takes to come to Durango to race the Iron Horse?
git out here!   one-year Training Plans available so, start training for next year if you can’t make it this year!

head bowed,
your coach who still toes the Start Lines for you…
