SUNDAY’S 11k Course Directions:
https://connect.garmin.com/
Start: Touch the stone Schneider Park monument just north of the Roosa Ave and 9th Street Bridge. Start your watch.
- Jump over to the Animas River Trail (ART) and head south (downriver)
- Enjoy the fast downriver run on ART for nearly 2 miles! note; careful! don’t overcook yourself on this preamble!
- Just north of Natures Oasis find a Connector Trail which brings you do the Camino del Rio crosswalk. hit the signal with your elbow; pause your watch if you want!
- Cross Camino del Rio and head up toward Lake Nighthorse on CR210
- after about 300 meters of uphill paved running, take the first right (north) onto the road which leads to the Smelter Mountain TH. ferret out the Old Dump Road which parallels HWY 160, which is now across our Sacred River.
- fly along the Old Dump Road heading toward the Old Uranium Mill which is now the Dog Park.
- through the Dog Park and left (west) onto HWY 160 heading west. you’ll need to cross HWY 160 at some point BEFORE or AT TECH CENTER DRIVE.
- Right (north) up Tech Center Drive; the grind begins in earnest . . .
- up Tech Center Drive past recycling center to where the dirt begins. this is Old Landfill Road. This run is like the Tour de Dumps!
- p the Old Landfill Road until it flattens out at the Old Landfill site. look left (west) for a shale ridge with a trail up it; this leads to Hogsfeet trail–take it.
- after the short but steep uphill ridge, go right (north) onto the Hogsfeet trail. this undulating single track crosses 2 bridges and up the “zig zags” overlooking the Old Landfill from the north.
- stay on Hogsfeet to the intersection with Hogsback Trail (Trails 2000 sign). Turn left and dance up the east face of Hogsback to Her precious summit. take a m(om)ent! maybe a pic!?!
- it’s all downhill from here! pull on your Big Girl Panties and scamper down along the narrow South Ridge of Hogsback, toward Smelter Mountain. watch thy step. here’s my vLog on this exact run; https://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=P9Ofl4R5iAI - follow the South Ridge until it merges rather precipitously onto the seldom traveled South Rib.
- after successfully navigating this crux downhill section (and cursing your Yoga Teacher perhaps) you’ll enjoy newly regained terrain from the former homeless camp and enjoy scintillating descending through pinon-studded shale terrain.
- as soon you spot the dirt Old Landfill Road you ran up, get back to it.
- turn right (north) going back up the Old Landfill Road for just a smidgen until discovering a gravel Pedestrian Path exiting from between large boulders on the east side of the road.
- descend the gravel Pedestrian Path until you spot the houses at the Ella Vita Ct cul de sac; find the connector trail over the footbridge onto the paved Ella Vita Ct.
- springing past Manna, and then a right (south) onto Roosa and back to the Start/Finish Schneider Park stone monument.
- Take a picture of your time if possible with the Stone Monument and message it to me at 818-590-2922 or email to: steve@wholisticfitness.
