McCrash: Why WF Teaches Meditation and Concentration
“I don’t why people are in such a hurry all the time, but they are willing
to kill for it.”
– Steve Marlowe, LA Bicycle Comuter Warrior
(see page 220 of TOTAL BODY TRANSFORMATION)
Two Wheel Warriors like my training bro Steve, nearly die at the undisciplined hands of cell phone talking, burger-eating, makeup adjusting ‘cagers’ (car addicts) every day of his life. Me too. The above “accident” (aka; training effect from lack of Awareness) occured today at the intersection of my own bicycle commute route 3 blocks from my home.
It surprises me not in the least, that the two most dangerous places along Ventura Blvd to survive on a bicycle are located at two violent junk food dealers; “In n’ Out Burgers” and “McDonalds.” I recall once getting”buzzed*” by a SUV coming out of “In n’ Out Burger”, nearly driving into me and then accelerating away…the only thing i could see through the exhuast plume was her personalized license plate which read, “Namaste”.
The ability to maintain focus and sensitivity in “mundane” daily life things such as car driving requires consistent practice in meditation; be it in the form of pranayama, zazen, or any of my Four WF Lifestyle Principles; Breath and Posture, Mindfulness, Appropriate Action, and Practice. And people wonder why i insist that Meditation must be integrated into any true from of personal fitness training.
Just ask the driver of the above car…
she would tell you…
if she could.
Noble Fitness Warriors,
save your own life and perhaps many, many others…
MEDITATE!
It is the ‘glue’ that fuses fitness into genuine personal health.

* Buzzed = Bicycle commuting lingo referring to the common ‘sucking in’ effect from passing cars and particuarly SUV’s, and big pickups (like the one pictured above), which creates a vortex and sucks us into the car and all too often, under the rear wheels or rear bumper. I have had two dear and very noble friends of mine already killed by the Buzz, and it is common conversation in peletons about who recently got killed or nearly killed whle training. i swear, if i get killed by a cager out here in LA before i can return h(om)e to my Rocky Mountains and attend to the deepening my own Practice, i am going to be pissed! oh wait. i’ll be too dead to be pissed. shit. of course i am making light of a very extreme sport; bicycle commuting/riding in big cities (hell, anywhere these days!). the whole key to Enlightenment is to die consciously, to in affect, transcend death which requires tremendous Meditation Practice during ‘life’ so that when we enter the Bardo Realms, our meditation training can capably carry us consciously into the navigation of the Bardo. if we die violently, as in a car crash, it would be very difficult – essentially impossible – to calmly enter the Bardo with elite consciousness as is prescribed by the spiritual training manuals and scriptures. in fact, many of the scriptures tell us that those who die a violent death are those who did not do the Inner Work of cultivating Compassion, Kindness, and Awareness in this or former lives. However, it is also taught that tremendous positive purification can occur at the moment of death, regardless of circumstance, if we enter it consciously and using a mantra or other technique(s) taught to us by our guru, or spiritual teacher.
