Native Durango outdoor athlete and outdoor performance coach/author/yoga teacher Steve Ilg (55) was the only skier to represent Durango at the 15th Annual Leadville Loppet – now an American Birkebeiner Qualifier and brought home an Overall Silver Medal in the marquee discipline; the 44k nordic ultra-marathon.   Ilg – who used to race for Durango High School at Leadville in the Nordic Combined – is a former Overall Champion of Leadville Loppet and recently finished 2nd Place Overall in the local Purgatory Twilight Winter Triathlon (January 10-24) and 3rd Place Overall in the Fall Creek Skiathlon  (5k uphill classic and skate ski), Wolf Creek Pass, CO on January 7, 2018 which required 3,600′ of vert in 7.4 miles to 11,703′.

Ilg, the only two-time Cover Athlete of OUTSIDE Magazine, reported to the Herald that, “I just want to thank my Durango students for inspiring this ol’ mountain goat ever Higher!  Am totally stoked to take another rare Overall Podium at my age!”    The Leadville Loppet is nationally known as this nation’s highest and perhaps most challenging nordic ultra-marathon.
