just back from another amazing gorgeous 2.5 hour road ride up in the Santa Mountains. the Santa Monica mountain are the refuge of my mountain spirit these days.

getting into them, only takes several minutes of dealing with Ventura Boulevard and her snarls of traffic. but usually, those serveral minutes contain more than a few life-and-death encounters with angry, speeding cagers (car addicts).

perhaps it’s Tax Time, increased Gasoline Prices, or maybe just the plantary alignment fueling the ever present angst among the cagers, but two very close calls have nearly caused me to experience anger arising toward the cagers. on Monday, just before my right hand turn to start the steep and spirit deep climb of my beloved Tuna Canyon, a “Prime Time Shuttle” van veered off of the Pacific Coast Highway onto the shoulder upon which i was riding and damn near put my ass into Prime Time at 70+ mph.

then, today, get this…i am NOT making this up…i was putting on my Lance Armstrong best, cranking up Old Topanga Canyon stoked after a 13 minute climb up the 6k climb of Stunt Road, when i sensed yet another speeding car addict coming up fast behind me on the narrow mountain road. moving over once again into my ‘gutter of nobility’ as far as i could, sure enough this metallic, tire squealing flash comes flying past me going WAY TOO fast for the 35mph mountain town speed limit.

after steering back onto the road pavement, glad to be upright, i caught a glance of the Porsche Canterra (sp?) that nearly disposed of me. the personalized licensed plates read,

get this…

“NMASTE”

how ironic would THAT be?

i can see the obit now:

“Steve Ilg, former State Champion cyclist an Registered Yoga Teacher, killed by a Porsche sporting “NMASTE” plates while riding his bicycle in the mountains.”

please tell your car-driving friends and family who do not Practice or ride bicycles to slow down.

as Gandhi taught, “There is more to life than accelerating its speed.”

that is all.

i bow to your Practice and sensitivity.
