Sandra Dawaghati yinishye, Tachii nii nishli, Kinyaa aanii  bashishchini.

(My name is Sandra Dawagahti. I am born for the Red-Running-Into-Water Clan, and born for the Towering House Clan).

I received information that I am qualified to compete in the Snowshoe Nationals in Bend, Oregon in March (15th to 17th).  Through Coach Ilg’s ongoing Graces, I am reaching out to you.

Going to Nationals would help me come one step closer to my dream speak. My heart goes out to my Dine people, and their fight with Diabetes. According to the Navajo area Indian Health Services there are 25,000 Navajos with diabetes and another 75,000 are pre- diabetic. Type 2 Diabetes is increasingly common among American Indian youths.  From 1994 to 2009, prevalence rates of diabetes increased by 110% in American Indian youth ages 15-19, and by 161% in American Indian young adults between the ages of 25-34 years.  I believe I can use my snowshoe racing at the National level to help raise awareness and inspire my People throughout the Navajo Nation toward the importance of lifelong fitness and health.  Running is a large part of our history and tradition. I want to help us return to the beauty and empowering nature of running –  be it through snow, sandstone mesa’s, or the difficulties of our lives.

3 years ago, Dawa nervously walked into my HP Yoga class – her first ever – saying to herself, “I’m only going to stay a half-hour…” Well, not only did Sandra stay the full ninety-minutes,  she pretty much has only missed a few of my classes since.  In 2011, she won my “HP Yogi of the Year Award” and earned her WF Tribal Nickname; “Dawagahti” which means, “Moon Blossom,” and relates to an auspicious mOMent during our training.   Dawa, then displayed unmatched consistency and willingness in her HP Practice, including knocking off one of my Three Sacred Sweat Pilgrimages (Imogene Pass Race), to earn my first-ever repeat winner of  HP Yogi of the Year Award in 2012.  When a new job interfered with my Monday morning classes, she immediately signed up for private sessions to continue her training.  She walks everywhere.  Has no car, “I am my car,” she replies to people who ask about her mind-boggling walking capacities.  She is more on time to our bodywork and privates than most of my clients who drive cars.

Committed to actively engaging her practice of yoga means one thing to Dawa; Serving the empowerment of her People. The statistics that Dawa mentions in her sponsorship letter to you is a far too grisly and accurate picture of a once proud Navajo Nation.  As you know,  ilg – like my snowshoe sponsor, Kahtoola – has for decades put forth money, time, and effort toward helping the indigenous people of Plane(t) Earth; the Tibetans, Hopi, and Navajo being among my main pursuits.   i know from direct experience with Dawa how deeply she is moved to help the Diné (the People)…dis-ease from poor fitness and health has ravaged her own Clans and the hurt she carries registers within her Soul…she more than wants to help her People,  she NEEDS to help…and now; you have a unique opportunity to help her help the original inhabitants of our precious country; Turtle Island…we owe our current freedom to her People, for it was the Navajo Code Talkers which produced a wartime communication network which the Japanese could not crack and led ultimately to preserving our national freedom…now, YOU can help the People who have helped in a priceless way for you to be Here Now, reading this…

Native Americans, in my lifelong experience (i’ve lived most of my life within the Navajo Nation and among her People),  don’t speak much.   During a recent snowshoe racing trip to New Mexico,  i gave Dawa a ride.  During the 3-hour ride?   ilg reckons Dawa chose to speak first like two or three times.   Yet, when Dawa does choose to speak?  It’s worthwhile.  As i spoke to Dawa about the possibility of her going to Nationals to raise Awareness for Navajo Health Issues,  her chi got lit (not too hard to ignite, i must admit). When i mentioned it would take money that i or her do not have,  it only inspired her to contact nearly every Navajo health organization.  As of this writing,  She has yet to receive even a return phone call from the multitude of agencies.  This only fired her up more,  “I’ll get to Nationals, even if I have to hitchhike and hunt Beaver along the way,” she emailed me.

Please support Dawa’s Mission;   As D’s coach and yoga teacher, I know that she can have a huge impact on the Navajo  community… with YOUR HELP…
