Salida, CO –
The National High School Trail Championship (NHSTC) – a trail race for high school athletes – has grown considerably over its past 7 years under the guidance of Race Director Kenny Wilcox,
“I really just wanted to create an anchor race for High School Athletes to train toward before they go full throttle into their High School XC training.”  This in-your-face double climb of largely singletrack
into a whirlwind of a speed-scrubbing, rock-garden punctuated descent of a testpiece is rapidly becoming such a monument race for HS racers that the entire TEAM USA showed up, and flexed hard
to capture the top spots in both boys and girls divisions.
Not long after the start gun went off on Saturday, July 29, 2023 just east of Arkansas River that over 50 qualified HS runners from as far away as Ireland attacked a course that featured switchbacks, climbs,
and descents to showcase their strength, finesse and trail running prowess over 700′ of vert across 5.8 miles of technical mountain terrain teetering over the town where hundreds of spectators waited and cheered.
By the time the dust did settle,  it was last years most consistently scoring racer at DHS; Dewa Ilg who crossed the finish line in a time of 45:55 to finish as the highest placed Durango HS runner and 2nd fastest 15 year old female.  Incoming DHS Freshman, Jack Purcell finished in 41:20 to place 68th in his first ever race at the HS level and won the 14 year-old category.
In the Open Race, it was Durango’s Imogene Ainsworth (student of local coach steve ilg) who took 2nd Overall and steve ilg who won the 60+ category by 30″ to finish 16th Overall in a time of 49:02
Dewa Ilg and Jack Purcell will now use their off season conditioning and racing for DHS XC. Official DHS XC training begins 8/8/23.
