a young Dewa, in now burning Ouray, Colorado…note the outdoor grill in background… ilg gets the whole 4th grilling thing…

of course there’s the whole grilling of the burgers and dogs for the 4th of July… I mean,  ilg was (and remains) a constant Daddying Presence of a now adult daughter…

however,   the whole Independence Day thing?  that’s an issue when it’s celebrated as for instance, this year as our country’s 250th birthday!!!   Woo!

no.  Native peoples like my full blood Navajo girlfriend for the past decade don’t get it, nor has ilg.  “our country” was and continues to steal Native People’s lives, cultures, and chronically to this day breaks Treaties and suppresses a very systemic genocide of Native Peoples.   to say that the 4th of July celebrates “our country’s birthday” is such another bitch slap to the beautiful First People who have lived on Turtle Island for eons longer than a mere 250 years.

tonight, before I published this,  I made Sandra and I :  Naʼahóóhai atood…
Chicken Stew with Oven Bread …

it just seemed a bit more authentic of a way to really honor this day not as Celebration of America’s Birthday,  yet rather,  to honor the ways, foods, culture and the kids of Those Upon Whose Native Lands We Build All Our Own Dreams, Families, and Joys.    yet,  it really doesn’t seem like many of us truly, deeply, and chronically appreciate the Native People, Culture, and even this amazing Turtle Island…
