Snowshoe qualifier to be held Feb. 9 at Nordic Center

The Winter Warrior 10K, a national qualifier for the U.S. Snowshoe Association National Championships, will be held Feb. 9 at the Nordic Center at Purgatory. The entry fee is $15 with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Durango Nordic Ski Club. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. on race day at the Nordic Center, across U.S. Highway 550 and just north of the entrance to Durango Mountain Resort.

Races will begin at 10 a.m. There will be a 5-kilometer (one lap) and a 10K qualifier for the National Championships to be held in Bend, Ore., on March 15-17. There also will be a Kidz Snowdash.

The course traverses groomed and singletrack terrain with 500 feet of elevation gain per lap. Local hydration company Tailwind Nutrition will provide an aid station.

Limited snowshoe rentals will be available at the Nordic Center. Rentals also are available at local outdoor shops.

Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers overall and in age groups. There also will be a raffle with more prizes for participants.

The event is sponsored by Tafoya Barrett and Associates, Pine Needle Mountaineering, Tailwind Nutrition and Kahtoola Snowshoes.
